Working from home: The BLT way

Remote working has been on the rise for years in many businesses, with some offering it as a benefit for work-life balance. Thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak, BLT has now become one of those companies.

Working from home is great, you can roll out of bed at 08:50, and enjoy the benefits of an oven at lunch time. But making sure a routine for productivity is essential.

So, since the team has dispersed throughout Medway and Swale, how is their new office life?

How are you staying motivated during work hours?

Chris

I’ve yet to get myself into any routine as the days really are merging into one. But I aim to have a coffee and some breakfast in the morning before work (in the garden if the weather is nice). I try to keep regular breaks, either grabbing another coffee, or checking on the children.

When I remember, I’ll take a short walk with the dog at lunch to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. I also make sure to stick to normal work hours and log off around 17:30 once I’ve completed a piece of work, otherwise I could find myself sat at the desk well into the evening.

First hot drink of the day is a tea, always tea. Then a shower, after that I am mostly conscious by the third cup of coffee. I’ve not been going out of the house, except the infrequent dog walk, but do have a garden so I can change my scenery now and then by taking the laptop with me, before the sun gets too strong.

Spotify, coffee, a good workout at some point and the thought of happy hour.

I’m one of those people that can’t sit still unless I’m doing something. I love my job and development keeps my mind active and there’s always a new component to build or challenge to overcome.

I don’t have kids, so the radio goes on and away I go.

Steve

Some days it’s a morning cup of tea, others it’s a home workout to get me motivated and in the right mindset for the day. I’ve somewhat got a daily routine planned out, but at the moment it’s a bit hectic with current house renovations. But, I put in my earphones and blast songs through the day to prevent distraction.

What keeps you busy/occupied during out-of-work hours and the weekends?

Chris

A mixture of new hobbies; all those tasks around the house that never got started, walking the dog, who definitely hates the 4 walks a day lifestyle, and bike rides to keep healthy.

I’ve not watched a lot of TV lately, but I did binge Tiger King, and Carole Baskin definitely killed her husband (Not an actual spoiler for those who haven’t seen it), and I’ve also started the BBC series Killing Eve.

Mid-week I normally jump on the PlayStation with some friends for a catch up and shoot a few things.

Joe Rogan’s podcast on YouTube has become a pretty solid reoccurrence, and a bunch of shows on Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime have all released new seasons recently, such as Westworld, Better Call Saul and Seal Team. Good timing.

I do game on the PC, mostly this involves catching up with old friends from school who I don’t get to see in person very often, and we have a blast with some coop games.

I’m dedicating a lot of time to catching up on 3D art as it’s an area I was interested in whilst at college and want to explore it more as the technology and opportunities have come so far since!

For a health & fitness fanatic, the lockdown of gyms has meant I now spend nearly every day working out to try and keep my sanity – Morning circuits, lunchtime runs or evening walks. When I’m not exercising, I am enjoying various cocktails and wines from around the world because it is still happy hour somewhere (which kind of counteracts the health and fitness side…)

I have binged The Office (US), Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares and currently getting through other series I’ve started but never finished, and thank to Ramsey, I am becoming a great chef.

After work, I’m usually cooking or playing the XBOX; even then it has to be something tactical.

I live on the site of an old Dockyard so I try and get out for a walk at least once a day. St. Mary’s Island is a short walk away and the causeway is a great jogging route.

I’m one of those cliché book-worms, except without the books (thinking emoji). I enjoy learning new skills and I always want to know more. At BLT, we’ve recently began expanding development into React.js and although this is early stages, I spend my weekends with a nice drink in one hand, and learning more about React.js to improve our websites and make it more progressive for clients. This includes a course by Harvard University which I’ve enrolled along with a number of Udemy courses.

Thankfully, I have a lot of DIY tasks to be completed so my free time is pretty swamped with those.

I make sure I save time for cycling and  long walks on the weekends to take a break from being inside the house – I’m loving the Darland Banks area in Gillingham.
