It can feel like a daunting task to plan your marketing calendar for the year ahead, but taking the time now will really help in the long term (we promise!).
Planning your content in advance means you’ll get a good overview of what’s happening when. Instead of having a last minute panic as you realise you’ve got nothing scheduled for the month.
Of course, it’s not always easy coming up with new ideas, but there are plenty of interesting dates and events in 2018 which you can use to your advantage!
The BLT Marketing Calendar
To help out, we’ve put together a handy eCommerce Marketing Calendar to make life a bit easier for you.
This list is by no means exhaustive – there are awareness & celebration days for pretty much anything and everything these days. But it’s a great place to start if you need a go-to guide for a year’s worth of marketing themes and ideas.
Remember, not all dates will be relevant to all businesses – so think about which ones will suit your company, and your audience, best.
Key Dates for Your Diary
Some seasonal themes will always work well for sales, promotions and offers. Join in with the New Year Sales, say you are having a Spring Clear Out, or offer some Spookily Good Halloween deals.
Other events are a great way to increase social engagement and User Generated Content. Why not create a themed photo competition with a relevant incentive or prize?! After all, people are more likely to trust fellow consumers than brands.
76% of consumers believe the content that average people share is more honest than advertising from brandsOlapic
You could also use in-house competitions – incentivise sales teams with the prospect of winning tickets to sports events, or host your own awards ceremony.
Some dates might be more effective to create interesting content for your social channels. Inspire your creative team with a trip to the London Art Fair, use the upcoming Local Elections as an opportunity to create a poll for your audience, or choose a theme and launch an office fancy dress competition!
It’s not just an excuse for a bit of silliness – a positive working environment increases productivity and fosters team spirit. Showcasing your activities on social media gives your customers a look behind the scenes, and seeing some of the real faces behind your company identity encourages trust in your brand.
Always Do Your Research
There are almost endless ways you can create and use content, but before you start, make sure you’ve done your homework!
- Know your brand – Your voice, your unique identity, the values you want to promote!
- Know your audience – Review your audience analytics to confirm your target demographic is who you think it is. Then make sure your topics relate to their interests and needs.
- Choose your content wisely – You want your marketing efforts to increase sales and engagement, not alienate existing customers! If a topic seems a bit risky, get a second opinion from another member of the team.
Once you’ve got your ideas together, why not input them into a calendar application. Then you and your team can easily see what is planned and schedule any tasks required ahead of the campaign.
